A visit to the sky burial place of Batang caused me to think about life and death while watching the snowy white landscape surrouding this special place.
For centuries already, Tibetans have disposed of their dead by chopping them up and feeding them to vultures. Apparently, lack of firewood makes burials impossible - since Tibetans strongly believe in reincarnation, the body is first left to rest for a few days after death, during which a priest will pronounce prayers to enable the spirit of the body to leave it. Once these days are over, the body is nothing more than the previous container of the spirit, and specialized body-breakers (called rogyapas) chop up in small pieces and prepare the body, mix them with tsampa (roasted barley flour also used for food); this mixture is then left on the burial site or dürtro.
