The pride of the region, the Puente de Occidente suspension bridge once was the largest of the continent. Indeed, this masterpiece of engineering is still a sight in itself.
I came down to the Puente de Occidente again, but now from the other side, and since I was on foot, I had plenty of time to examine the entrance of the bridge, and some of the details and memorial plaques commemorating the engineering achievements of the bridge. One of the striking features of the bridge are the two pairs of pyramidal towers, one pair on each side. From just under their top, thick metal string ensure the stability and force of the bridge. Even though there is only one lane on which traffic can cross, there are two ample walkways on both sides of the bridge, probably indicating the requirements of the late 19th century, when the bridge was constructed by engineer José Manuel Villa.
