Harar has many sights, but one of the main attractions is the people you meet on the streets, the scenes unfolding before your eyes, the fantastic light of the early morning.
Harar is at its best in the early morning. The sun casts long shadows on the streets, women cleaning the streets throw up dust which, in combination with the warm early morning light gives the streets an almost mysterious atmosphere. Shadows step through the dusty clouds, lenghtened on the street by the low sun. Of course, the light cast on the people and houses is most beautiful at this time of day. People get ready for market, and there are several markets in Harar: the Oromo market in the east, near Erer Gate, the Christian market in the west, near Showa Gate, and the main market right in the middle of town.
