Sandy streets, an old fort and peace make the island of Gorée a nice escape from the hustle of Dakar.
An idyllic place in West Africa is without doubt Ile de Gorée near Dakar. The place is very peaceful, quiet, far from the hussle and noise of Dakar itself. Yet it is only a short time by boat from Dakar. When I was there, there was a very good hotel/restaurant owned by a Frenchman directly in the small harbour in which you arrive.
