Double deckers are much more than just public transportation - they are London's prime symbol.
One of the advantages of those older models is that they have an open entry/exit door at the rear. Very convenient if you want to jump on or off the bus at the last moment, or whenever the bus stops (not necessarily a bus stop). Once inside, sitting at the front seat of the top level is the obvious place to have a perfect view of the city gliding by.
